Talking Points
A short-term, out-of-state rotation is not sufficient for visiting residents to achieve full competency in Dilation and Evacuation (D&E). However, it does provide valuable opportunities to strengthen skills in electric and manual vacuum aspiration (EVA and MVA) and to begin developing foundational D&E experience.
Abortion restrictions in the residents’ home states often limit training in key areas, replacing evidence-based approaches with fear-based practices in comprehensive options counseling, post-abortion contraceptive counseling, and miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy management.
The primary goal of the out-of-state rotation is to offer meaningful exposure to integrated family planning and abortion care in a setting driven by clinical best practices.
